Being a Difference Maker

I keep running across pictures from my recent trip to Haiti – each one opening a floodgate of memories. The picture posted on this page is of Nathaniel – one of Pastor Felix’s sons. The photo credit goes to his older brother, who borrowed my camera and took a series of pictures. Nathaniel served as my self-appointed guide while we were in Les Pinasse – showing me around, sitting with me during church services, and being a friend.

The picture reminds me that in many respects, children are children, no matter where they live. They are curious, playful, happy, and generally love life. The picture also reminds me that in spite of all the attributes that kids share – far too many live hard lives and face uncertain futures. Unfortunately, that is true of the kids in Haiti, as well as some of the children in downtown Chandler, Arizona (and any other place in the world).

Haiti: One Month Later

A month has passed since I returned from a week long trip to Haiti. It was a trip that has profoundly impacted my faith, and my outlook on life. Haiti has changed me.

That being said, I have quickly settled back into my routines – in many cases, taking for granted the daily blessings I am afforded. For example, at a particularly stressful point in the week, I caught myself saying that I was in “survival mode.” I am not in survival mode. I just need a healthy dose of perspective. Many of the Haitian people I met struggle every day to address the basic needs of life. I just need to remember…

The Way to a Quieter Life

I can remember hearing a joke that went something like this:

A torrential rain storm caused a river to swell beyond its’ banks, flooding the local community and sending residents scrambling for safety. One particularly devout man was slow to react, and with the flood waters rising rapidly, he climbed to the relative safety of the roof of his home. Being a person of great faith, he began praying for a miracle — certain that God would save him.

As he prayed, and the flood waters continued to rise, a neighbor passed by in a small row boat. “Climb in,” the neighbor said to the man. The man thought this would demonstrate a weakness in faith, so, he refused, and continued to pray for a miracle. Soon, members of the local fire department arrived in a larger boat and begged the man to climb aboard. “No, I have faith that God will save me,” the man replied. He remained on the roof of his...
